Kingston, NY - Ulster County Clerk Nina Postupack is pleased to announce the installation of “A History of Health Care in Ulster County,” a new exhibit for 2021 now on display in the 2^nd floor Archives Gallery located in the Ulster County Office Building.  The exhibit features records from the 1600s through the present and showcases medical professionals from the past 350 years. In conjunction with this exhibit and celebrating Women’s History Month, the “Historical Profile” of prominent physician and suffragist Dr. Alice Divine is on display for the month of March on the 1^st floor of the Ulster County Office Building, 244 Fair Street, Kingston.  Both exhibits are also available online at https://clerk.ulstercountyny.gov/archives/online-exhibits.

With the current pandemic ongoing, now is a better time than ever to examine how far we have come in improving our health care. From the early barber surgeons of Wiltwyck to our amazing professionals today, the evolution of health care has been nothing short of astounding.  This exhibit gives the viewer a look at the medical field in Ulster County starting back in the late 1600s and then a glimpse into each century’s advancements through current times.

 “Over the past year, medical professionals in Ulster County and worldwide have proven that their dedication and commitment to the well-being of our communities is of the highest importance,” stated County Clerk Postupack.  “It’s often difficult to recognize history being made in the moment, but we hope that this exhibit acts as a tribute to the truly historic and heroic efforts of our medical professionals.”

Recognizing a local physician and celebrating Women’s History Month, the historical profile of “Dr. Alice Divine – Woman Pioneer” showcases a leader in our community, who advocated for women’s rights and child welfare.  Alice Divine was an active participant in the suffrage movement, serving on committees and canvassing the community.  She received her medical degree from Cornell University in 1900 and practiced for almost 50 years in her hometown of Ellenville.
