ULSTER COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH NEWEST DISPLAY IN HISTORICAL PROFILES SERIES FEATURING CLAYTON “PEG LEG” BATES

Kingston, NY - In celebration of Black History Month, Ulster County Clerk Nina Postupack is pleased to announce the newest display in the Historical Profiles series featuring entertainer and community patron Clayton “Peg Leg” Bates.  The exhibit panel will be on display for the month of February on the 1st floor of the Ulster County Office Building, 244 Fair Street, Kingston.

Celebrated dancer and resort-owner Clayton “Peg Leg” Bates was a beloved member of his community, both in Kerhonkson and his childhood home of Fountain Inn, South Carolina.  He loved entertaining and often used his talents to raise funds for the less fortunate.  Peg Leg was a firm believer that everyone deserved happiness, regardless of race or their condition in life.  He spoke to youth groups, taught at dance schools and performed regularly right up to the night before he passed.  He was a joyful man whose main goal was to inspire others to rise above their situations and make the most out of life.

“Peg Leg Bates was a pillar of the Ulster County community,” stated County Clerk Nina Postupack.  “We are proud to be able to present this look into his life and history.  He was a true inspiration to everyone who met him, and we hope his story continues to inspire for many years to come.”

On Wednesday, February 1st, the Peg Leg Bates Historical Profile will be at two Black History Month kick-off events.  From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, the panel will be displayed at the Kingston City Hall, 420 Broadway, for the Black History Month Kingston Breakfast Mixer, where attendees can learn about all of the many events and activities planned for this year.  Next, at 5:00 pm, the panel will be displayed at the Ulster County Black History Month kick-off event on the front lawn of the Ulster County Office Building at 244 Fair Street.  After these events, the display will be available in the lobby of the County Office Building for the remainder of the month.
