A History of Health Care in Ulster County

The year 2020 proved to be a trying time for people all around the world. With the Covid-19 Pandemic wreaking havoc globally, medical professionals in communities large and small stepped up to do their part to mend the sick, curb the spread, and keep their communities as safe and healthy as possible. These brave medical professionals put their own lives at risk to save the lives of countless others, a tradition proudly carried throughout the profession for centuries.

A Prelude to Peace

In 2015, the County Clerk's Office commemorated the 350th anniversary of the signing of the "Peace Treaty between Richard Nicolls and the People called the Sopes Indyans made 7th October 1665." This exhibit focuses on the years starting with the founding of Wiltwyck in 1652 up to October 1665 on the eve of the signing of the treaty. Within just a short amount of time, many events would happen to these settlers. They experienced two wars, a takeover by another nation, and yet they continued to shape a culture that is alive and vibrant to this day.

About the House

The Persen House, owned by Ulster County since 1914, has undergone extensive restoration since emergency repairs in 1999 revealed its historical significance. Preservation Architect Kenneth Barricklo's Historic Structure Report reveals that the house was built in five distinct phases from 1661 to 1922. The house has witnessed the entire documented history of Kingston and even pre-dates the formation of Ulster County.

Drafted by Peter Stuyvesant, this agreement required settlers to destroy their separate dwellings, re-build them in a concentrated area, and surround it with a "palisades" or log ..
